Most researchers believe that social media addiction is caused by the release of dopamine when certain activities occur on the platform. A like or comment triggers the brain’s reward system, strengthening the desire to repeat the activity.

It is well-documented that social media platforms use design elements and algorithms that increase user engagement for greater advertising revenue. These platforms utilize the Fogg Behavioral Model, which incorporates motivation (FOMO), action (interaction), and triggers (notifications).
